National Ballet of Canada | Nijinsky Canadian Premiere
Guillaume Côté, Skylar Campbell Dance Title Role
The Hamburg Ballet’s Alexandre Riabko to Guest
New! Ballet Talks Move into the Auditorium
February 6, 2013… Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced that Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté and Corps de Ballet member Skylar Campbell will dance the title role of Nijinsky. Guest Artist Alexandre Riabko, Principal Dancer with The Hamburg Ballet, will make his debut with the National Ballet in the role of Nijinsky. Declared a “must-see show” for 2013 by the Globe and Mail, the highly anticipated Nijinsky is choreographed by Hamburg Ballet’s Director and Chief Choreographer John Neumeier and makes its Canadian premiere, March 2 – 8, 2013.
The National Ballet is the first company Mr. Neumeier has granted permission to perform his masterwork, Nijinsky. The acclaimed production recently received accolades from the Chicago critics: “a stunning homage to a great experimentalist and a compelling theatrical achievement in its own right.” (Chicago Tribune).
Guest Artist Alexandre Riabko has been a Principal Artist with The Hamburg Ballet since 2001. This award-winning dancer was a Finalist of the Prix de Lausanne and the recipient of the Dr. Wilhelm-Oberdörffer-Prize and Les Étoiles de Ballet 2000 Dance Award.
Nijinsky is a complex character study of one of ballet’s most legendary figures. Part memory and part biographical narrative, Nijinsky exploresthe passion and renowned physicality the celebrated dancer possessed, as well as his ultimate descent into madness.
Beginning this March, the National Ballet’s popular and free Ballet Talks will be moved to the R. Fraser Elliot Auditorium at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. This new location will allow a greater number of patrons to be accommodated at the Ballet Talk and in better comfort. The Ballet Talks will begin one hour before the performance and seating, on the orchestra level only, will be on a first come, first served basis. The Ballet Talks for Nijinsky will be led by Ballet Master Lindsay Fischer.
Additional casting and performance dates will be announced shortly.
The 2012/13 season is dedicated to the memory of The National Ballet of Canada’s greatest patron Walter Carsen, O.C.
Lead philanthropic support for Nijinsky is provided by The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation, an anonymous friend of the National Ballet, The Volunteer Committee, The National Ballet of Canada and The Producers’ Circle.
