Ballet goes Analogue | It’s time for Lomography
Now here’s something hip, accessible and fun to try. Lomography. Dinky, retro, affordable, colourful toy-like cameras that allow anyone to have a whizz with pictures. They’ve been popping up all over the place and as you can see, quite a few ballet shots have been creatively taken too. Now it’s your go! There are 10 Golden Rules (below) and to be honest, the cameras are too gorgeous not to go for it.
Lomography began with a fateful encounter in the early 1990s…
… when students in Vienna, found a Russian camera – the Lomo Kompakt Automat. They were astounded with the photos that it produced – the colours were vibrant, with deep saturation and vignettes that framed the shot – it was nothing like they had seen before! Lomography was born and is now a worldwide organisation dedicated to analogue photography.
Two things to keep in mind as you consider which small camera will suit your needs. The Chinese lens is an exact copy of the Russian one. The difference is that the China-made lenses use a newer mixture for the glass and the mounting ring is different. While there is a slight difference between the lenses, you will not be able to tell by simply looking at your photos – especially if you cross-process your films or take in account the variation of results depending on the film you use with your Lomo LC-A. There are too many factors that determine the end result of a picture and no one will be able to tell the lenses apart.
The Russian lens cameras are a little bit more of a collector’s item.
You can take the history of the item into consideration and know that the Russian lenses were made in Russia, with Russian glass, and are no longer manufactured. Once they’re gone, they’re gone!
