The HAMBURG BALLET Highlights until July 2011: Revival of Midsummer Night’s Dream, Guest dancer Alina Cojocaru, 37th  Hamburger Ballett-Tage with world premiere

The second part of HAMBURG BALLET’s season 2010/2011 brings a second revival, an internationally sought after guest dancer, young dancer-choreographers at the Ernst Deutsch Theater as well as the 37th Hamburger Ballett-Tage including the world premiere of John Neumeier’s Tenth Symphony by Gustav Mahler.

On February 25, the revival of John Neumeier’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be staged – the first highlight of the year 2011. The ballet, created in 1977 and based on William Shakespeare’s comedy, is considered a “jewel in John Neumeier’s œuvre” (Hamburger Morgenpost). The last time it was performed on the stage of the Hamburg State Opera was in 2006. Until July, the ballet, which recounts the bafflements and confusions of love and illustrates the interplay of reality and dream, will be performed nine times. In three performances, Alina Cojocaru will be guesting as Hippolyta/Titania. On February 28 as well as March 3 and 8 The Royal Ballet principal, voted “Ballerina of the Decade“ in Moscow in 2010 and much sought after as a guest performer, will be dancing this double role.

Spring brings news from the young choreographers at the HAMBURG BALLET. From February 28 to March 5 the Ballet School will be performing at Hamburg’s Ernst Deutsch Theater. In the “Creativity Workshops II” students of the schools final classes will present their choreographies. The pieces, choreographed as part of the school’s final exams, will form two different programmes which will be performed during the week.

The 37th Hamburger Ballett-Tage constitute the final highlight of the 2010/2011 season. This year, the festival opens with the world premiere of John Neumeier’s new creation Tenth Symphony by Gustav Mahler. With this ballet, the artistic director of the HAMBURG BALLET will continue his exploration of the Austrian composer’s work and simultaneously commemorate the 100th anniversary of day of Mahler’s death.
