Ballet youngsters raise cash for Northern Ballet’s Sponsor a Dancer campaign
Students from Headingley Ballet School visited Northern Ballet on 4 December to present a donation towards the Company’s Sponsor a Dancer campaign. The cheque for £125, was presented to Northern Ballet dancers Isadora Valero Meza and Kevin Poeung at the Company’s Quarry Hill home.
During their visit the young dancers were also treated to a tour of Northern Ballet’s award-winning home and were able to watch the professional dancers in rehearsal for Northern Ballet’s new production of Cinderella which premières at Leeds Grand Theatre on 17 December.
Amelia Bell from Headingley Ballet School, said, “Northern Ballet is an inspirational dance company and has a fantastic building that we have been lucky enough to use for our dance shows. The Headingley Ballet School dancers wanted to show their support and admiration for the Company by donating towards the Sponsor a Dancer campaign. The funds were raised following their Pass It On second hand dancewear scheme which allows pupils to buy second hand dancewear and shoes for a small donation. The dancers were thrilled to be invited to Northern Ballet to present the cheque in person and we would like to thank the whole Northern Ballet team; we will certainly keep our fundraising going”.
Sponsor a Dancer was launched in 2011 in response to severe budget cuts. It has since raised more than £500,000 to support the Company’s inspiring and inventive work and enables Northern Ballet to retain a full Company of 40 dancers.
Sponsor a Dancer has also been selected to be included in the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2013. During this annual match funding event any money donated to Sponsor a Dancer from 10am on 5, 6 and 7 December could be doubled.
Donations received through the Big Give will contribute towards enabling Northern Ballet to continue to provide employment and development opportunities for a minimum of 40 classical ballet dancers, nurture young and upcoming talent through training programmes and be able to continue to create and perform full-length ballets.
Starting from 10am on 5 December, donations towards Northern Ballet’s Big Give Christmas Challenge can be made online
About Northern Ballet
Northern Ballet is one of the UK’s five large ballet companies. Based in Leeds it performs throughout the UK as well as overseas. Northern Ballet’s productions mix classical dance and theatre, embracing popular culture and taking inspiration from literature, opera, or giving a unique interpretation of popular classical ballets.
Northern Ballet is the busiest touring ballet company in the UK and is typically on the road for around 24 weeks of the year. The Company of 40 dancers tours a combination of new works and established repertoire to cities throughout the UK and are the only large scale ballet company to do so.
In 2011, in response to severe cuts in funding for the arts, Northern Ballet launched the ‘Sponsor a Dancer’ campaign to ensure it was possible to retain a full company of 40 dancers and thereby continue to create and perform the work audiences know and love. To date, the campaign has generated more than £500,000.
Northern Ballet’s Sponsor a Dancer campaign has been selected to participate in the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2013. This means any donations made to the campaign on the 5, 6 and 7 December could be doubled by The Big Give at no additional cost. Donations can be made online from 10am on 5, 6 and 7 December.
Matched funds will be released by The Big Give at 10am on the morning of the 5, 6 and 7 December. Online donations are matched on a first come, first served basis and donations will be matched as long as there are matched funds still available. If the match funding available each day has been claimed, a message will appear informing the donor of this. Donors will still be able to make donations but it would not be matched so donors are encouraged to chose to return to the site the following day and donate as close to 10am as possible. The Christmas Challenge will conclude once all of the matched funds have been exhausted. In the event that matched funds continue to remain available, the Christmas Challenge will finally close on 18 December at 5pm.
