Behind the scenes photoshoot at The Royal Ballet

Ballet

So, what does go into producing great photographs on a ballet + fashion shoot ?

I promised you I’d upload some videos from my recent photo shoot with Royal Ballet corps de ballet dancer Celisa Diuana, and here is the first one !  Un-edited, deliberately, the aim is to give you a glimpse of the work that goes into setting the static shots such as this one (you can see all the other photographs here) :

There is a lot to consider – most importantly the light, and then where the shadows fall, both on the wall and floor, setting the lights if needed, working out the best positions in the studio for the dancer to maximise natural light and in this case, the London skyline. At the same time we had to give Celisa enough room to jump and turn. More videos will follow, including the spectacular grande jeté against the backdrop of the London Eye, but this one shows Celisa running through some of the steps she is currently rehearsing for Theme & Variations :

Theme & Variations is part of a quadruple bill at the Royal Opera House as part of the Autumn season and comprises La Valse | New Brandstrup | Winter Dreams | Theme & Variations.

Performance dates are : 15 | 18 | 22 | 28 & 30 October at 7.30pm and 16 October at 12.30pm

TWO DEBUTS

If you decide to book for the matinee on 16th October (a Saturday), you will be able to watch new Principal dancer Nehemiah Kish in La Valse and Itziar Mendizabal in Winter Dreams.  Worth booking !  You can call the box office on 0207 304 4000 or go online.

Most interesting to see how this is done, & I’m impressed how long she can remain unmoving on pointe in the video!

Oh wow, thank you for this peek into a dance shoot! Like a lot of ballet, it’s so easy to get caught up in the beauty of the final product, it’s hard to stop and truly appreciate all the hard work behind it! Thanks for this, lovely.

Karena – thank you – very kind of you to say so !

Anne – I said the very same thing to Celisa during filming. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to show you the video because the still images can’t show you how strong she is between poses etc,.

Jude – thank you; yes I agree and that’s exactly why I wanted to share this video. More to follow !

ilene – thank you, you too !
