Canadian Premiere of Wayne McGregor’s Chroma
Presented with Serenade and Emergence
November 24 – 28, 2010
November 1, 2010… The National Ballet of Canada presents the Canadian premiere of acclaimed British Choreographer Wayne McGregor’s Chroma, featuring a score by British composer Joby Talbot which includes unique orchestrations of three songs by The White Stripes. Chroma will be presented on a mixed programme with George Balanchine’s timeless Serenade and Crystal Pite’s award-winning Emergence November 24 to 28, 2010 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
Wayne McGregor, Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet, created Chroma in 2006. The work earned rave reviews when it first premiered as well as the Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Best Choreography and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, among others. Chroma features set design by acclaimed architect John Pawson. The National Ballet will be the first company outside of The Royal Ballet to perform this brilliant work.
Among the many great works created by Russian-born choreographer George Balanchine, Serenade is considered by many to be his masterpiece. A powerful, haunting work, filled with images of lyric meditation, Serenade emphasizes in melodic visual terms Tchaikovsky‘s ravishing Serenade in C Major for String Orchestra.
A riveting, dark-hued work that casts a swarming, scurrying group of dancers, insect-like, in an eerily subterranean universe, Crystal Pite’s Emergence explores the instinct for creating social forms through the movement and architecture of the choreography itself. Emergence won four Dora Mavor Moore Awards in 2009 for Outstanding Production, Outstanding New Choreography, Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Sound Design/Composition by Owen Belton.
The opening night pre-show Ballet Talk will be given by Artistic Director Karen Kain and Mr. McGregor 45 minutes prior to the curtain.
