Crisis at Christmas

crisis at christmasEducation and engagement can transform the lives of homeless people and Crisis at Christmas provides an exciting opportunity to involve their guests in a range of stimulating activities, including dance.

During the week Crisis will offer a meaningful, inspirational and fun programme of activities and entertainments.

At a time of year that is all about giving, I’m sure there are ballet dancers and students who have a ready-made performance which they could share at Christmas with an appreciative audience.

Crisis will once again be planning a full programme of entertainments which will include everything from live music, film clubs, circus acts and bingo to giant board games, karaoke, dance troupes, theatre groups, quizzes and magic. They aim to have an exciting and eclectic range of performances of all flavours. The entertainments programme has always been very well received and appreciated by our guests. If you are an outgoing performer who can engage and inspire then Crisis would love to have you on the team.

We are also aiming to provide creative workshops such as dance, theatre, music and comedy. If so, and you would like to run one of these, then please contact us.

There are various options available in terms of dates and times as you can stay in one centre or travel around various centres.

For the Entertainments Team, Crisis are looking for volunteers who can convey a sense of enthusiasm to their guests. Entertainers should be self-supporting acts; there is no time or resources available to form bands from individuals.

Crisis at Christmas essential information

The centres are open by 12 noon on Sunday 23 December and close at 11 am on Sunday 30 December.

Some are day centres, which are open from 9.30 am till 9 pm. The other centres are residential centres, open 24 hours, and provide sleeping facilities for guests.

Crisis is a national charity however our Christmas centres currently only operate in London and Newcastle. We hope to open Christmas centres in other locations in future years. To apply for Crisis at Christmas in London please fill in our online application form. If you wish to volunteer in Newcastle please contact us.

Our centres in London are in zones 1-3. They are located in buildings that are donated to Crisis for use over Christmas only, such as schools, colleges and empty buildings.

  • Our day centres will be in North London, Stratford, Bermondsey, Hammersmith and Deptford. Full addresses and maps are available on the online application.
  • For security and confidentiality reasons, the locations of our Residential Centres are confidential and full addresses can only be provided once volunteers have been confirmed into that centre. Where possible, we give an idea of centre location via “whereabouts” maps on the online application. These give a rough idea of location without detailing the exact address.
    • General Volunteers must be aged 16 or over by 22 December 2012. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 25 on your shifts. If this applies to you, please ask your parent / guardian to apply first and make a note of their reference number. When you apply as an under 18 year old you will be asked to submit your parent / guardian’s reference code before you can continue your application. Please note that you will only be permitted to sign up to the same shift and roles as your parent / guardian. There is no upper age limit for volunteers.
    • Service, Activities and Logistics Volunteers must be aged 18 or over. There is no upper age limit.

As with other types of Crisis at Christmas volunteering, we would like if possible for you to commit to a minimum of two shifts, so this means volunteering on two days from 23 to 29 December inclusive. If you are available for one day only please email ccengagement@crisis.org.uk and we can organise alternative arrangements.

For entertainments volunteers your performance will fall inside one of the allocated shifts on that day, you will not be expected to perform for the whole time.

The shift times are as follows:

Residential centres: 23 – 29 December 12pm – 5pm or 5pm – 10pm

Day centres: 24 – 29 December 12pm – 4pm or 4pm – 8pm

Please select the shift you would like your performance to fall within and we will allocate you a specific time. Reliability is a key issue and we need you to turn up on time for your allocated performance.
