Retired Royal Ballet dancer Darcey Bussell spectacularly flew into the Olympic Stadium last night on a flaming phoenix to dance to a piece created by Christopher Wheeldon.

As Bussell lands on the centre stage, she’s met by four male dancers – Gary Avis, Jonathan Cope, Edward Watson and Nehemiah Kish – and over 200 ballet dancers – including Kei Akahoshi, Ellie Sharpe and Chantel Roulston from English National Ballet, dancing en pointe to ‘Spirit of the Flame’, composed by David Arnold.

Bussell came out of retirement for this performance.

You can watch the entire Closing Ceremony on iPlayer now, and Darcey Bussell’s section begins at 2hr 55 min.

London 2012 has released backstage rehearsal footage on its YouTube channel.

If you are outside the UK, you can watch the whole ceremony here.

Wasn’t it fabulous?! Lovely to see Johnathan Cope in action again, too…

Imogen – thank you for your comment. Yes, Darcey’s entrance was very brave, and all of the dancers should be congratulated for a great job. Shame it was so late, for younger viewers it might have just been too late. Even the BBC highlights tape doesn’t have the dancing!

I can certainly see why you’re all so mad/upset/irritated with NBC. My recommendation would be to contact NBC – I have asked them for an explanation but I’m not really expecting one; it’s their decision after all.

It’s too late now but if you want to influence their decision-making next time, I recommend you get in touch with them and tell them how angry/disappointed/upset you are. If they perceive that there isn’t enough interest – which is odd in itself since Darcey’s entrance alone was a major stunt – and you don’t challenge that, things may not change…..

I did reply to NBC. Actually I called them 3 times to notify them of the ballet and asked them to please be sure to air it on TV because my son was dancing in it. I couln’t get to London and I really wanted to see him and the others dance as well as the entire town. We all sat up until late night to see the show. You can imagine our disappointment when it was not aired. I called and emailed the network the next day and their response was they can not be responsible for covering everything and didn’t have the funding to either. However they were “proud” of him. My response back was; if they didn’t monopolize the airways and would have let other networks share in the recording of the olympic’s then everything could have been covered. I appreciate the photo’s that have been put on the internet and on utube. At least some have used good judgement and have good taste when it comes to the arts. The stamina these dancers have is = to the athletic participants and they should be treated with the same respect.

Charlotte : thank you for your comment. It is indeed a shame that NBC took the decision to cut the ballet section as the flame was extinguished and for you, with Nehemiah dancing, it must have been very disappointing indeed. Many readers have complained. NBC has not responded to my request for an explanation and it is, of course, for them to decide what they broadcast. Perhaps enough people have raised the issue with them that it may influence their decision making in future. Who knows ?
