Dutch National Ballet | OVERTURE/DAVID DAWSON LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS/SHEN WEI
* World première Le Sacre du Printemps (Rite of
Spring) – Shen Wei
* World première Overture – David Dawson
* Performances as part of the Holland Festival, 15 until 22 June at The Amsterdam Music Theatre
The Dutch National Ballet’s contribution to the Holland Festival 2013 consists of two world premieres by two contemporary choreographers who are counted among the most important of their generation. Shen Wei, originally from China and known for his impressive contribution to the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, is creating a work for a Dutch company for the first time. One hundred years after it was first performed, Wei is creating a new ballet on the world famous ballet composition Le Sacre du Printemps (Rite of Spring) by Igor Stravinsky.
David Dawson, who has recently choreographed some remarkable works for some renowned companies returns to The Dutch National Ballet with a new work Overture. Szymon Brzóska composes new music for Overture, Eno Henze designs a spectacular video set.
The world premiere of Overture/David Dawson – Le Sacre du Printemps/Shen Wei will be danced by the Dutch National Ballet on Saturday 15 June in The Amsterdam Music theatre and runs until Saturday 22 June 2013 as part of the Holland Festival 2013.
British choreographer David Dawson was acquainted as a dancer for the Dutch National Ballet until 2000 and as Resident Choreographer until 2006. Dawson, who is currently working as a freelance choreographer from his base in Berlin, has recently choreographed works for English National Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet and the Mariinsky (formerly Kirov) Ballet. Though Dawson’s work is based on classical ballet technique, the British choreographer interprets it in a very personal, modern-poetic way. Recently he created the overwhelming timelapse/(Mnemosyne) (2011) and day4 (2012) for the Dutch National Ballet.
