Ivan Vasiliev to dance with English National Ballet in Roland Petit’s Jeune Homme et la Mort
Bolshoi ballet supremo Ivan Vasiliev will dance with English National Ballet First Artist Jia Zhang in Jeune Homme et la Mort on Friday 22 July as his personal tribute to Roland Petit.
Following Roland Petit’s death on 9 July, Vasiliev contacted Zizi Jeanmaire, Petit’s widow, expressing his sorrow. He was put in touch with Luigi Bonini, who is working with English National Ballet staging the Roland Petit season which opens this Thursday. Vasiliev expressed his strong desire to dance Roland Petit’s work with the Company offering his time free of charge as his tribute to the famous choreographer.
Ivan Vasiliev was one of the last dancers to work with Roland Petit on Jeune Homme in Russia and English National Ballet is delighted that he has chosen to dance with the Company in this very special season.
WayneEagling, Artistic Director of English National Ballet said, “After working with Ivan Vasiliev, Roland Petit told me of his respect for him as a dancer, so to have Ivan come on board for our season is very special, and an important tribute to this great choreographer.”
France’s most famous choreographer, Roland Petit, revolutionised ballet with his work for Hollywood films and his provocative, poetic theatricality. Petit epitomises the Left Bank creative expressionism of Paris, from owning and operating the Casino de Paris to marrying France’s most glamorous and seductive dancer, Zizi Jeanmaire.
English National Ballet’s programme features three of Roland Petit’s greatest works, L’Arlésienne, Le Jeune Homme et la Mort and Carmen at the London Colisuem from 21 – 24 July.
This season is dedicated to the memory of Roland Petit (1924 – 2011), whose genius is evidenced through these ballets. He will be remembered throughout the world as one of the finest choreographers of the 20th century.
