Ballet San Jose has announced  the signing of famed international dance star José Manuel Carreño to perform the lead role of Basilio for BSJ’s company premiere of Don Quixote, staged by Wes Chapman after Marius Petipa and Alexsander Gorsky and supported by Symphony Silicon Valley under the baton of BSJ Music Director and Conductor George Daugherty.  The former principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre will partner BSJ principal dancer Alexsandra Meijer as Kitri for the opening night performance on Friday, February 15th at 8pm and the closing matinee on Sunday, February 17th at 1:30pm

BSJ Artistic Director Wes Chapman, said, “Having José perform with BSJ in one of his signature roles like Basilio is thrilling for us. He will bring great energy and expertise to our company premier of Don Quixote.”

Born in 1968 in Havana, Cuba to a family with an established tradition of classical dance, Carreño was just ten when he began studying with Alicia Alonso, Lazaro Carreno and Loipa Araujo. He trained at the Provincial and National Ballet Schools in Cuba, and immediately joined the National Ballet of Cuba where he became an established favorite among Cuban dance cognoscenti.

José won the prestigious Gold Medal in the New York International Ballet Competition (1987) and was later awarded the coveted Grand Prize at the Jackson Mississippi Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi, (1990) from which he accepted an invitation from Ivan Nagy to join English National Ballet as a Principal Dancer. In 1993 Sir Anthony Dowell (Director of England’s Royal Ballet) invited Carreño to become a principal dancer with Royal Ballet.

In 1995 he was invited by American Ballet Theatre’s artistic Director, Kevin Mckenzie to join American Ballet Theatre as Principal dancer.  After a stellar career, he retired from ABT in 2011 to become an acclaimed Guest artist around the world dancing in Galas and with company’s such as Bolshoi Ballet, Kirov Ballet, Royal Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Tokyo Ballet, Berlin Staatsopera Ballet, Teatro Alla Scala, Opera di Roma, National Ballet of Canada, Teatro Colon (Argentina), Teatro Municipal de Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and Ballet de Monterrey (Mexico).

Carreño will dance Basilio opposite Alexsandra Meijer’s Kitri on Friday, February 15th at 8pm and Sunday February 17th at 1:30pm at San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Based on an episode from Miguel de Cervantes’ famous novel, Don Quixote de la Mancha, the ballet follows its title hero, a middle-aged country gentleman absorbed with tales of chivalry, who sets out to defend virtue and punish those who violate the code of honor. With his servant Sancho Panza as his armor-bearer, he travels to Barcelona, only to mistake Kitri, an innkeeper’s daughter who is in love with a barber, for his dream-lover Dulcinea. A dance-packed feast of comedy, drama, romance, intrigue, betrayal and fantasy, Ludwig Minkus’ rousing score endows each scene with rich atmosphere.

Don Quixote runs February 15 through 17 at San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets to the four-performance run are available via Ballet San Jose’s website or by calling the Ballet Box Office at 408.288.2800.

Tickets are $21 – $105.
