London Coliseum to host tribute to Galina Ulanova
Russian Ballet Icons Gala 2011 – Galina Ulanova 100 anniversary
A gala performance marking the centenary of the birth of legendary Russian ballerina Galina Ulanova will be held on 15th May at the London Coliseum, home of the English National Ballet.
Russian Ballet Icons Gala 2011 will bring together a dazzling cast of dancers and leading figures from the world of ballet – led by one of her favourite pupils, Vladimir Vasiliev, who is also President of the Galina Ulanova Foundation. Arts promoters Ensemble Productions are proud to present this unique evening – believed to be the only centenary celebration of Galina’s life and the work taking place outside Russia of this scale – in association with the Galina Ulanova Foundation and the City of St Petersburg.
The audience will be treated to many of Ulanova’s signature roles such as Romeo and Juliet, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, The Dying Swan, Chopiniana and The Red Poppy. Soloists will also perform special dedications to the great ballerina assoluta (named ‘the world’s number one’ by Rudolf Nureyev), including works by foremost contemporary choreographers such as Maurice Bejart, Jean-Christophe Maillot, Jose Martinez, Angelin Preljocaj, Twyla Tharp, Alistair Marriott and Vladimir Vasiliev himself. The artistic director is Vladimir Vasiliev.
The programme will be presented by dancers from leading companies (Bolshoi, Mariinsky, Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Berlin Staats Ballet, Grand Opera Paris and Ballet of Monte Carlo), as well as final-year students of the Vaganova Academy, where Ulanova studied, and young laureats of Galina Ulanova Foundation including Gary Avis, Bernice Coppieters, Alessio Carbone, Mara Galeazzi, Dorothée Gilbert, Dmitry Gudanov, Olga Khokhova, Darya Klimentova, Ekaterina Krysanova, Vladislav Lantratov, Ulyana Lopatkina Svetlana Lunkina, Vladimir Malakhov, Vadim Muntagirov, Marianela Nuñez, Evgenia Obraztsova, Alex Olivera, Nadia Saidakova, Marat Shemiunov, Olga Smirnova, Thiago Soares, Sergey Strelkov, Andrei Uvarov, Svetlana Zakharova and Igor Zelensky.
Ulanova, who was also a great actress, was the Bolshoi’s leading soloist for 16 years, and remained at the top of her profession until she retired at the age of 50 – after which she focused on teaching, coaching many of the best-known Russian dancers. Her legendary qualities will be explored further through rare video fragments played during the Gala, and in an exhibition held at the Coliseum on the day of the show. The performance will be followed by a dinner in the presence of the dancers and Russian and international celebrities.
