March 9 – 13, 2011

Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced principal casting for Don Quixote onstage March 9 – 13, 2011 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

The opening performance on March 9 at 7:30 pm will feature Principal Character Artist Hazaros Surmeyan in the title role of Don Quixote, Principal Dancers Guillaume Côté debuting as Basilio, Greta Hodgkinson as Kitri, Aleksandar Antonijevic as Espada and Xiao Nan Yu as Mercedes.

Making debuts in Don Quixote this season are Principal Dancers Heather Ogden and Bridgett Zehr as Kitri, Principal Dancer Zdenek Konvalina and Second Soloist McGee Maddox as Basilio, Principal Dancer Aleksandar Antonijevic and First Soloists Keiichi Hirano, Patrick Lavoie and Etienne Lavigne as Espada and First Soloist Tanya Howard as Mercedes.

Based on Miguel de Cervantes’ epic tale, Don Quixote, inspired by his reading of chivalric romances, goes in search of a fair lady with his squire, determined to prove that the old code of chivalry still lives. This crowd-pleasing classic features some of the most bravura choreography in the ballet repertoire including the spectacular, virtuoso Grand Pas de Deux in Act III.

Don Quixote, choreographed by Nicolas Beriozoff, after Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky, features magnificent Spanish sets and costumes by Desmond Heeley and lighting by Robert Thomson. Premiered by the National Ballet in 1982, Don Quixote is restaged by Ballet Master and Artistic Director, YOU dance Lindsay Fischer and Evelina Krasinova from Canada’s National Ballet School with choreographic adaptations that return the plot to Cervantes’ novel.
