Ballet NEWSEight Debuts in Cinderella
November 11 to 20, 2010

October 7, 2010… Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced the principal casting for Cinderella, which includes eight debuts. Cinderella is onstage November 11 – 20, 2010 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

The opening performance on November 11 at 7:30 pm will feature Sonia Rodriguez as Cinderella, Guillaume Côté as Her Prince Charming, Rebekah Rimsay as Her Other Stepsister and Lorna Geddes as the Fairy Godmother, all of whom originated the roles in 2004. Making her debut in the role of Her Stepsister is Tanya Howard.

Debuting in the title role in Cinderella are Principal Dancers Xiao Nan Yu and Bridgett Zehr. Second Soloist McGee Maddox makes his debut in the role of Her Prince Charming and First Soloist Rebekah Rimsay and Second Soloist Alejandra Perez-Gomez make their debuts as Her Stepmother. Debuting as Her Stepsister is Corps de Ballet member Krista Dowson and Corps de Ballet member Tiffany Mosher makes her debut as Her Other Stepsister.

In his 2004 version of Cinderella, James Kudelka has retained the distinctive features of the timeless fairy tale but has brought to the fore the latent comedy and the subtly anarchic underpinnings of the narrative. Set to Sergei Prokofiev‘s score with Erté-inspired art deco set and costumes by Canadian designer David Boechler and lighting design by Christopher Dennis, the result is physically inventive, riotously funny yet poignantly romantic.

The Fall Season continues with the Canadian premiere of Wayne McGregor’s Chroma, George Balanchine’s Serenade and Crystal Pite’s Dora Award-winning Emergence November 24 – 28, 2010.

  1. May Says:

Time for National Ballet of Canada to visit England soon! And it would be brilliant to see Karen Kain in a mime or walk-on cameo………..for those of us who never saw this elegant ballerina dance live.

  2. Ballet News Says:

May – I so agree with you. Perhaps we can make it happen …
