Highly Anticipated North American Premiere of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Opens June 4

Jillian Vanstone, Sonia Rodriguez and Heather Ogden Cast as Alice

April 21, 2011… Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced that First Soloist Jillian Vanstone and Principal Dancers Sonia Rodriguez and Heather Ogden will perform the lead role of Alice in the highly anticipated production of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by British Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. A co-production between the National Ballet and The Royal Ballet (UK), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland opened to great success at the Royal Opera House in London in February and makes its North American premiere in Toronto on June 4, 2011 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

Principal Dancer Zdenek Konvalina, First Soloist Keiichi Hirano and Second Soloist McGee Maddox will dance the role of Jack/The Knave of Hearts. Dancing the role of Lewis Carroll/The White Rabbit are Principal Dancers Aleksandar Antonijevic and Piotr Stanczyk and Mother/The Queen of Hearts will be performed by Principal Dancers Greta Hodgkinson, Xiao Nan Yu and Bridgett Zehr. The Magician/The Mad Hatter will be danced by Guest Artist and Principal Dancer with The Royal Ballet Stephen McRae and Second Soloist Robert Stephen. Artist-in-Residence Rex Harrington will perform the role of Father/The King of Hearts and Principal Character Artist Kevin D. Bowles will dance the role of the Duchess.

Mr. Wheeldon is one of the most important and sought-after choreographic artists at work today known for his unique synthesis of neo-classical and modern dance vocabularies. His full-length, two-act interpretation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland combines the well-known Lewis Carroll narrative with a commissioned score by renowned British composer Joby Talbot with set and costumes by Tony Award-winning designer Bob Crowley and lighting by Natasha Katz.

The Royal Ballet’s run of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was completely sold-out. Tickets for the Toronto production are on sale now and are selling quickly.
