Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents the return of Romeo + Juliet


WINNIPEG, 2014 season s exquisite classical ballet Romeo + Juliet, February s choreography is a perfect s score and provides all of the drama, passion and tragedy s timeless tale. This grand romantic work highlights the stunning stage production and the impeccable classical technique of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

The opportunity to dance the exquisite and emotional role of Juliet has become a rite of passage for female members of the Company, having been previously performed by a line of luminaries including Evelyn Hart, Tara Birtwhistle, and Vanessa Lawson. The role of Juliet Capulet will be danced by Royal Winnipeg Ballet Principal dancer and first cast Amanda Green. This season’s production of Romeo + Juliet will be her debut performance in this leading role. The leading male counterpart, Romeo, will be danced by
RWB Guest Artist and first cast Liang Xing.

Romeo + Juliets 2014 production also sees the return of captivating and talented former RWB Principal dancers Birtwhistle and Lawson. Birtwhistle performs the role of Lady s former leading males will also take the stage for this production:  Johnny W. Chang as Lord Capulet and Jaime Vargas as Friar Laurentius.

+ Juliet
s World Premiere was given by the Kirov Ballet in 1938. Set to a powerful and profound score by Sergei Prokofiev, Rudi van Dantzig was among the first non-Russian creators to develop new choreography for the work. His version was first performed by the Dutch National Ballet in 1967 and later given its Canadian premiere by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1981. Since then, Romeo + Juliet has become
one of RWB’s crown jewels from its list of repertoire.

s version, beginning with a feuding clash between Capulets and Montagues, progressing to the young lovers meeting at a grand ball, and the sealing of their fate in the unforgettable balcony scene. Their love becomes their undoing, as events and fate conspire s production will transport audiences to 16th century Verona with its opulent costumes and beautifully crafted set pieces reminiscent of urbane Renaissance Italy.

Rudi van Dantzig was an artist of the rarest calibre; a writer, dancer, and choreographer, whose aesthetic instincts were matched only by his strong says André Lewiss Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Audiences are encouraged not to miss this year’s production of Romeo + Juliet.  After its last performance on February 16, the repertoire will be placed on a moratorium and may not be released for several years to give way to Royal s new creations.
