SAN FRANCISCO BALLET SCHOOL PERFORMS STUDENT SHOWCASE AT NOVELLUS THEATER AT YBCA, May 30-June 1, 2012
Three Performances Benefit the Prestigious San Francisco Ballet School
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Tuesday, May 15, 2012–The San Francisco Ballet School, the official school of San Francisco Ballet, has announced the repertory for the 2012 Student Showcase. SF Ballet School’s students and faculty will present three Showcase performances, consisting of class demonstrations and repertory works, at the Novellus Theater at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, May 30-June 1, 2012. Following the performance on May 31, the San Francisco Ballet Auxiliary will host a fundraising dinner benefiting the school’s scholarship and financial aid programs.
The dinner will honor SF Ballet School Associate Director Lola de Avila, who will be stepping down in late August to oversee the full-time operation of the Maria de Avila Ballet School in her native Spain and pursue other interests. Under de Avila’s direction, the School embarked on its first-ever European audition tour earlier this year; its men’s program was expanded and strengthened; a standard for curriculum was set; and currently, over half of the Company members have received their training at the SF Ballet School. Over the next three months, de Avila will work closely with current SF Ballet School Trainee Principal Patrick Armand to transition her many duties. Armand officially assumes the duties of associate director on September 1.
On May 30, 31, and June 1, audiences will get a glimpse of the progression in ballet training, from beginning students giving class demonstrations, to advanced-level students on the verge of professional careers. The advanced-level students will perform George Balanchine’s Western Symphony; an excerpt from Act II of August Bournonville’s La Sylphide; Spinae, a work by SF Ballet Corps de Ballet member Myles Thatcher; and Dunas, a new work by SF Ballet Corps de Ballet member Francisco Mungamba. Both Thatcher and Mungamba trained at the SF Ballet School.
The May 31 performance will not include class demonstrations, and the May 30 and June 1 performances will include select repertoire as noted above, as well as class demonstrations.
“The students look forward to the Student Showcase each year, as it allows them to demonstrate the dedication and commitment that they’ve invested into their years of training,” said de Avila. “This year’s performance is particularly exciting and challenging, given the diverse repertory that the students will be performing.”
