In Scottish Ballet’s unique new production of Alice, the heroine falls through the lens of Charles Dodgson’s (Lewis Carroll) camera instead of a rabbit hole, to find herself in the curious world of Wonderland.

To celebrate this, Scottish Ballet is inviting photographers and digital artists to submit images of their own personal embodiment that is everything Alice. This is Scottish Ballet’s first ever photography competition to celebrate the world premiere of Alice.

Alice is an unforgettable take on the most curious of tales. After tumbling through a camera lens, Alice finds herself in a strange dreamlike place. Drifting through episodes from Lewis Carroll’s treasured stories, she meets a series of fantastical characters who each impatiently try to teach her something, and guided by Carroll himself, she has to rely on her wits to find her way out.

Scottish Ballet is inspired by these unusual twists in the tale & wants to find out how you visualise Alice’s magical adventures in her strange new world. Lewis Carroll himself was a keen photographer and his vision has captured the hearts of children for decades. Now they want you to create an image that embodies your perception of the Alice stories.

The competition will be divided into two different categories: Photography and Digital Art. A panel of judges will choose winners in each category as well as one overall winner.  There will also be an additional winner chosen by the public through an online vote on the Scottish Ballet Facebook page.

The winning entries will feature in:

  • The official Scottish Ballet Alice programme
  • A Scottish Ballet Alice exhibition, to be displayed in the National Library in Edinburgh
  • A private exhibition for friends and sponsors of Scottish Ballet
  • A virtual exhibition on the Scottish Ballet website

The overall winner will also receive two tickets to an Alice performance of their choice and a copy of Scottish Ballet: Forty Years.

There are no restrictions on style – landscape, portrait, figure compositions and abstract images are all welcome. All Scottish Ballet ask is that you bring your own interpretation to the Alice story and that you present it in an eye-catching and unusual way.

Please email alicephotographycompetition@scottishballet.co.uk or visit Scottish Ballet’s website for more information, competition rules and to submit your entry.

The deadline for submissions is Friday 4 March 2011.

PLEASE READ THE FULL TERMS AND CONDITIONS BEFORE SUBMITTING ANY IMAGES.  BY SENDING SCOTTISH BALLET AN IMAGE YOU AGREE TO COMPLY WITH ALL RULES AS STATED IN THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS.
