Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall today (Friday 25 November) paid a visit to the set of Strictly Come Dancing at BBC Television Centre.

A fan of the series, The Duchess, who is President of the National Osteoporosis Society, attended rehearsals for the show following an invitation from Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood, who is also a patron of the charity.

Welcomed by Craig and Katie Taylor, the BBC’s Head of Entertainment, The Duchess met presenters Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly on set before being given a tour of the studio where she met the remaining celebrity contestants still in the competition, alongside the Strictly Come Dancing professional dancers.

She also watched a rehearsal of this week’s professional dancers’ group performance of the Foxtrot to Adele’s Rolling In The Deep, performed by Brendan Cole, Pasha Kovalev, Natalie Lowe and Katya Virshilas.

She then watched Harry Judd and Aliona Vilani rehearsing their Quickstep for this Saturday to The Pretenders’ Don’t Get Me Wrong, followed by a rehearsal between actress Anita Dobson and Brendan Cole, dancing a Cha-cha-cha to Uptown Girl by Billy Joel. This week Anita will be dancing with Brendan following the injury of her regular professional partner Robin Windsor.

Following her visit to the studio, Her Royal Highness also took the opportunity to tour behind the scenes, visiting the costume department to see some of the costumes up close and to learn about the work which goes into designing the outfits for the series. She then visited the studio gallery to meet some of the team who put the show together each week.

Speaking after the visit, Craig Revel Horwood, said: “I’m delighted to have welcomed The Duchess to Strictly Come Dancing. Having got to know her through our charity work and having learnt what a fan of the series she is, it has been a pleasure to show her a sneak preview of this Saturday’s show and some of the work which goes into making the series.”

What a wonderful surprise! And such a wonderful way to spread charity! :)

@Cloudia well, royal patronage can mean a very great deal to arts companies. For example, Diana, Princess of Wales in particular really used to get stuck in and get involved with English National Ballet, paying them surprise visits, watching rehearsals, picking up the phone if they needed help with fundraising etc, in a way that the public might not have been aware of. She really loved ballet. So did Princess Margaret. Our Royals are famous for loving horses and outdoor pursuits, and I personally have everything crossed that the Duchess of Cambridge proves to be a lover of ballet. Some of the younger royals are ballet-goers and it would be wonderful if they took on the sort of role that we miss so much following the tragic passing of Diana, Princess of Wales.

@cafe Fashionista well, I’m not sure it was that much of a surprise! I’m not aware that Brucie visits the set on Friday for rehearsals – usually someone stands in for him as I understand it – so perhaps he was tipped off as you can see him there in the photograph.
