Strictly Come Dancing week 9
The Strictly Come Dancing final is just 3 weeks away. Tonight’s 8 remaining celebrities have to dance out of their skins in order to impress the judges and win viewer votes to stay in the competition.
First to dance are Kimberley and Pasha. The Jive is quite a hard dance and their routine is very fast. Such a confident start! Kimberley keeps up the character all the way through – even Jive Bunny looks happy. Len thought it was a great job but there were one or two tricky moments with the odd spin that was slightly off. Bruno loved the timing and energy, and “almost perfect.” Craig agreed and loved the fast, efficient footwork. “Cracking job.” Darcey said that Kimberley kept up with Pasha which isn’t easy and she too loved their dance.

Can Dani and Vincent match that ? The Viennese Waltz is deceptively simple and romantic. Starting in a Gondola, with Vincent as the Gondolier, Dani is dressed in ruffles of sugar pink, sat on a plush red chair. But when they get going ! Beautiful heel leads from Dani. Swirling over the floor, the dance is gorgeous. Surely, it’s perfect ? Bruno launched into Italian, but I think he liked it. “It was absolutely enchanting.” Craig loved the dance but not the back attitude turns. It was sweet but didn’t blow him away. Darcey loved Dani’s lower body but he wants more curve in her upper body. “Beautiful.” Len agreed, and loved the flavour of the dance which was charming.
They score 34, so the answer is YES!
Michael and Natalie dance the samba, so the heat is on. Natalie is working the showgirl look but Michal is mincing. He’s trying hard and has been working on his hips, but he can’t match Natalie with her party spirit and there are mistakes. Craig said “it wasn’t completely dreadful but it still looks very awkward.” Darcey picked up on Michael’s “outstanding improvement” and the content in the dance was extraordinary, but Michael’s hips are never going to look natural. Len said “it wasn’t fantastic but it wasn’t that bad.” Bruno nearly fell off his chair because finally, Michael let himself go, but it was a “one hip wonder.”

Nicky and Karen dance the Argentine Tango this week, to the Bond theme Skyfall, hence the bow tie in the AT. Moody, intense, taut. And I LOVE Karen’s pointed foot at the end. The audience, too, are on their toes. Darcey picked up on Nicky’ posture which needs more topline shaping and she wanted a more lustful dance from Nicky, so that it doesn’t look too hard. Len liked the lifts but not the overall feeling of the dance. He wanted a little more fluidity. Bruno said “you have the licence to kill.” It was a little bit too staccato but he loved the performance. Craig said it was too aggressive and stompy but it was still a great dance.

Lisa and Robin dance the Quickstep. They start by watching the weather… their song is Bring me Sunshine, and when that starts they quickly get into hold and skip acros the floor. It does look as though Lisa is dragging a pot of custard around the floor though. It’s not light enough, and the ending (both of them upturned in a box) I could live without. Len saw a bit of sunshine and thought that Eric and Ernie might be looking down and cheering Lisa on. Bruno thought it was captivating but then he fell off his chair. Craig didn’t like the shaping of Lisa’s hand and thought that, despite the incredible energy, it was heavy. Darcey said it was beautiful.

Denise and James dance the salsa, and start as they mean to go on. Denise is great in the spins, and the lifts are fast and secure, if not always elegant. Bruno said “hot and spicy with some very sharp edges.” There were a couple of near-misses which they covered up well but James admitted that tonight, he was as nervous as the celebrities and he went blank. Craig loved Denise’s spins but picked up on the faults. Darcey loved the attack but the speed of the lifts did leave them a little inelegant at times. Len picked up on how well Denise recovered after James went blank.

Louis and Flavia close the show tonight with their Charleston. Behind changing screens, Louis appears with his stethoscope and notes. Luckily Flavia loses the flowerpot hat quickly and the acting coach has done his work with Louis. The routine has quite a slow beat, but that suits this dance and all the tricks go according to plan. Craig found some personality in Louis “at long last.” Darcey said “you’re a silent movie star now.” Len loved the dance and Bruno couldn’t agree more. “Do you do house calls ?”
