Richard Arnold Salsas out of the spotlight, at the supersized Strictly Come Dancing spectacular from Wembley Arena.

Strictly Come Dancing returned to London’s iconic Wembley Arena this weekend, for its 2012 ballroom spectacular. Sir Bruce Forsyth & Tess Daly were masters of ceremony, in what proved to be the grandest and most spectacular Strictly to date.

The remaining nine couples waltzed their way across a supersized Strictly dancefloor, in front of a live audience in the arena of over 6,000 people – as well as the millions more at home – in the ultimate glitterball extravaganza. As ever, the fearsome foursome – Len Goodman, Darcey Bussell, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood – were on hand to critique each routine and award a score out of 10.

On Sunday night’s result show, Tess was joined by Claudia Winkleman to reveal the results. It was revealed that Richard Arnold & Erin Boag and Nicky Byrne & Karen Hauer had both landed in the bottom two and would face the dreaded dance-off.

After both couples had dances for a second time, each judge chose who to save:

CRAIG chose to save Nicky, saying:

“Just for sheer exuberance and energy, I am going to save Nicky and Karen.”

DARCEY chose to save Nicky, saying:

“Well you both performed very well tonight, but for content and energy as well, I am going to save Nicky and Karen.”

BRUNO chose to save Nicky, saying:

“Both highly entertaining, but I have to go as well with power and content, and that was delivered by Nicky & Karen.”

Meaning Richard would be the next celebrity to leave the competition.

Reflecting back on the results of tonight’s show, Richard stated “I’ve loved it. Do you know what is amazing about this experience is that this party is happening in millions of homes around the country. The one thing I’ll take from it is that now when I walk down the street people no longer cross the road to avoid me! Now they smile, they want to chat. It’s been amazing. You guys here have been amazing. You know how much I love you guys [the judges] and to be part of this company of players has been amazing. I know where I’ll be next week – it’s my birthday, it’s a Saturday, I’ll be with my Godchildren, with my family & friends who have been going through the whole thing, and I’ll be popping a cork and seeing who is here next week. It’s extraordinary, this show just gets better and better. And one final thing – this is madam’s [Erin] tenth series, I call her “her indoors” and a round of applause for Erin Boag, she has made the last two months fantastic. I always thought I’d miss the wardrobe most, but I don’t think I will, I will miss Erin Boag, who – every Monday – it’s like climbing a mountain, and every Monday she’d say ‘welcome to another week. I’ll miss that on Monday.”

And their professional partner Erin added “Richard has made the last two months of my life a big joy. He’s full of life and full of energy, and I’m really proud to have taught him, and to have danced with you. And to call you my friend.

Sunday’s Results show featured a performance from supergroup pop sensation, Girls Aloud, singing their new song Something New, as well as the legendary pop princess Kylie Minogue, with a special rendition of her seminal classic The Locomotion.

The Strictly Top Ten line up at the half-way point of the competition to try to dance into Wembley Arena next week. Tonight’s show opens with hideous stuff from Tess and Claudia Winkleman (gawky and awkward, unnecessary lifts), who is standing in for Bruce Forsyth this week. Why does Claud always look as though she’s essentially nocturnal and has been forced out of hibernation to appear on tv? She’s smarter than that.

Denise and James dance the Paso Doble, which they attack with passion. Denise has a fiery red dress and attitude to match. Fast, crisp and danced with intent, it has ignited the contest this week with perfectly placed Spanish lines. Len “thought it was fantastic.” Bruno called Denise “the red menace.” Craig said it had drama and amazing chaine turns. Darcey loved the character and immaculate turns.

They score 39 – four nines!

Richard and Erin dance the Charleston this week. Fixing Erin’s hair, Richard kicks things off well, loses a little timing along the way and maintains the hairdressing theme with sparkly scissors at the end. Bruno thought there were plenty of highlights with the slapstick comedy. Craig thought it was eccentric and picked up on the loss of timing but said it was still his best dance yet. Darcey enjoyed the choreography but not the flat feet. Len thought it was light and frivolous.

Louis and Flavia dance the Waltz. Flavia swings under the arch – this is the liquid Moon River – and they quickly take hold and float around the floor, Flavia in a dusting of silver sequins. This time, they end up on the swing together. It looked perfect. Craig wasn’t entirely happy and sets the judges off with criticism of Louis’s “pedestrian” turn at the top of the routine. Darcey loved the routine and control but Louis does need to keep his head left.  Len said it had “more polish than No 10’s front door.” Bruno said that Louis “had danced into the hearts of the nation.”

Fern and Artem dance the Salsa, with Fern in flaming pink, having dusted off the judges (reference to her routines always “dusting and polishing”) and though Artem’s chest is partially covered, it’s still on show to distract. Fern is in the party mood (they dance to Party Time by Gloria Estefan) and she’s given it her all. Darcey thought Fern partied all the way through the routine and Len thought it was Fern’s best dance so far. Bruno said “what an interesting turn of events.”

They score 27

Victoria and Brendan dance the Quickstep, setting off from a famous New York yellow cab in an awful lot of black and tan dress. The hem sweeps up the front row of the audience (including Cheryl Cole) as they fly over the ballroom floor. Brendan brings Craig a present – a number 10 paddle covered in cobwebs through lack of use. Len thought it was fast and slick in the footwork and Bruno thought Victoria was focused and confident all the way through. Craig loved the movement and timing and Darcey picked up on Victoria’s growing confidence.

Dani and Vincent dance the Tango with a red telephone box and a cheating Vincent! A furious Dani gets to grips with her man and they attack the dance, finishing with a crescendo of Spanish flourishes. Bruno loved it, “it started with a strop and ended with a drop.” Craig thought it was clean and sharp and fantastic. Darcey wasn’t so keen on the start, as she thought Dani looked like a moody teenager but loved the dance. Len liked the light and shade about the dance.

Nicky and Karen, in emerald green, dance the Foxtrot to The best is yet to come by Michael Bublé. Microphone in hand, Nicky trips the light fantastic on his own until Karen appears and they take hold. His posture needs work but the dance is sharp and dynamic. Craig noticed a vast improvement and thought the dance delivered excitement. Darcey loved the mood and style but she missed the drive and travel from the dance. Len agreed but loved the performance. Bruno loved the Vegas beginning.

They score 30

Kimberley and Pasha dance the deceptively simple Viennese Waltz. The dance is exquisite and Kimberley has the dress of the night; miles and miles of fabric overlaid with a pewter sequin sheath and floaty wisps about the shoulders. Darcey found the performance very emotive with beautiful lines. Len said “more spins than Alastair Campbell.” Gentle and whimsical, and very enjoyable. Bruno said “really, achingly romantic.” Seamless. Craig thought it was delicious.

They score 34

Natalie and Michael dance the Salsa. in electric blue. It’s a little sticky and uncomfortable with a problem in the middle and the timing is a little out but Natalie works what skirt she has to great effect. Len found it a bit mechanical but he liked the lifts and the content. Bruno thought the timing was still far from perfect and a little bit jagged. Craig wasn’t overly keen and picked up on the mistakes in the middle, but he loved the energy and the lifts. Darcey liked it.

They score 26

Lisa and Robin wrap up tonight’s show with a Foxtrot, or the trot on, as Lisa likes to call it. In top hat, tails and canes they kick off side by side and quickly take hold. Heel leads, big smiles and a bit of a caper at the end. Bruno loved the showbiz but Lisa isn’t supposed to lead! Craig loved the ferocious footwork and impeccable timing and the cyclonic rate of the dance. Darcey said “WOW” She noticed everything and loved Lisa’s enthusiasm all the way through. Len said “good Foxtrot and fun.”
