Ballet Backstage | Northern Ballet’s launch of The Great Gatsby part 2
Last night I published part one of the London launch of Northern Ballet’s preview of The Great Gatsby, coming your way in March.
Today I want to highlight the dancer/actors of the company and these photographs showcase the drama, seduction and danger of the ballet, perfectly encapsulated in the characters that are so well drawn by the dancers, who are :
Myrtle (Victoria Sibson), Tom Wilson (Ben Mitchell), Jordan (Hannah Bateman), Tom Buchanan (Kenneth Tindall), Gatsby (Tobias Batley), Daisy (Martha Leebolt) Nick (Guiliano Contadini), and Gangster (Matthew Broadbent).
F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel was set in the 1920’s, which was also the time that photography started to become popular and more widely available. Eastman Kodak’s Box Brownie was invented in 1900, so Fitzgerald was one of the first writers to have grown up with ‘snapshot’ photography. Gatsby itself is a series of distinctive scenes that stay in the mind, which fits perfectly with photography. For this reason, I want the rest of this feature to demonstrate the versatility of Northern Ballet’s dancers, through photography.
So, as the atmosphere darkens, the photographs do the talking ….
