Ballet News
– the only professionally written website focusing on classical ballet – leads the UK’s ballet field on facebook.

Launched on facebook on 10th January 2010, the Ballet News facebook page has surpassed 124,000 ‘likes’, making it the number one page on that social media platform relating to classical ballet in the UK. In fact, the Ballet News facebook page surpasses a self-styled ‘World Class’ organisation that includes both opera and ballet content on its facebook page.

Providing an edit of the best content 24/7, the Ballet News facebook page is curated by Ballet News’ founding editor, Cheryl Angear. The Ballet News facebook page is a small but significant part of the overall Company strategy, with the website (founded in 2008) taking centre stage in delivering breaking ballet news, interviews, reviews, competitions and the world-renown Cupcakes & Conversation interview series with professional dancers.

Dan Freeman, a dance photographer and radio host in Canada said, “CONGRATS to Ballet News. Ballet News has been an integral part my success as a dance photographer. Ballet News is the go to site/page for Ballet on an international scale, and people are immediately complimentary when they see one of my images featured on Ballet News. Ballet News is recognized as a true source for the readers and viewers of Ballet on every level.”

Cheryl Angear said, “I’m really over the moon to have reached this long-term goal. Any success in business is hard-won, and my readers have been a wonderfully supportive bunch right from the start. They have kept me going on the days when it’s been challenging. My readers give me continual feedback – good and bad – and that helps to inform my edit of the page. I hope that Ballet Newsers everywhere are celebrating this milestone with me !”

In demand by collaborators worldwide, including the illustrator who created the drawing at the top of this page, Noemi Manalang – a long-time collaborator who mixes ballet with the latest fashion trends straight from the catwalk, the Ballet News website and social media platforms provide access to a large and diverse audience, who themselves have wide-ranging interests, from gardening and arts and crafts to photography.

Ballet News has many long-term supporters who are well-known people and household brands across a diverse range of disciplines from fashion and films to television and music, and they include : Joanna Lumley, GHOST, Tamzin Outhwaite, Primrose Bakery, Damian Lewis, Chanel, Paloma Faith, Moschino, LK Bennett and Craig Revel-Horwood. By offering their support to Ballet News, these successful, talented individuals and companies demonstrate to a global audience that an interest in ballet compliments varied backgrounds.

Ballet Tutus for auction

Ballet and fashion have not always been great bedfellows.  Designing garments for stage that are capable of being both comfortable and allowing full freedom of movement has proved a challenge for many.  These tutus are not designed to be danced in, hence the catwalk show at the Summer Party held at Kensington Palace, where they will be auctioned to raise funds for the company. To snap up your tickets, please visit the English National Ballet website.

Ballet meets high fashion at Kensington Palace –

English National Ballet launches designer tutu auction for its Summer Fundraising Party in June

On 29 June 2011 English National Ballet will take over one of London’s most glorious outdoor settings, The Orangery, Kensington Palace, for an evening of breathtaking ballet, fabulous fashion and fundraising.

The Company is placing itself firmly in London’s summer social calendar with an event inspired by this season’s obsession with all things ballet. English National Ballet’s Summer Party will be an evening of live music and performances from our star dancers on the terrace while being entertained by a jazz orchestra with music from the Company’s hit Summer show Strictly Gershwin. An evening of entertainment will follow with performances from our most popular repertoire in this most intimate setting, giving guests a truly memorable ballet experience.

As part of the event English National Ballet has invited nine top fashion designers to create tutus exclusively for the Summer Party to auction live on the night. We are delighted to have the following designers working with us on this project which is a first for English National Ballet. Erdem, Agent Provocateur, Giles Deacon, Julien Macdonald, Roksanda IlIncic, House of Worth, Kinder Aggugini, Bruce Oldfield and Moschino. We can also reveal that Christian Louboutin and Beatrix Ong will design shoes for the auction. Each designer has chosen a dancer from the Company to inspire their creation – on the night of the party the dancers will model the tutus in a catwalk show, before they go on display for guests to bid.

English National Ballet began speaking to designers in February this year, and has been astounded by the support and excitement from the fashion houses. Creative initiatives like this form an integral part of the Company’s fundraising activity; helping to sustain the vibrant life of English National Ballet, supporting our renowned Learning and outreach work and enabling us to deliver world-class ballet to the nation.

Nadja Swarovski, VP of International Communications at Swarovski, supporter of English National Ballet and chair of the Summer Party event committee commented,English National Ballet is very close to my heart, and I am always thrilled to see their beautiful productions on stage, performed by such a talented group of dancers. This auction is an original way of bringing together the enormous popularity of ballet and the glamour of the fashion world, whilst creating original pieces of couture. I applaud this innovative idea, and look forward to a fabulous evening in June.”
