NEW YORK CITY BALLET ENGAGES YOUNG NEW YORK-BASED FURNITURE DESIGNERS IN NEW DESIGN OF DAVID H. KOCH THEATER PROMENADE SEATING

 

Designers Asher Israelow, Egg Collective and Token

 

Selected for 2012-2013 Launch of New Design Initiative

 

On Tuesday, September 25, New York City Ballet will unveil new collections of seating and lounge furniture on the Promenade of the David H. Koch Theater, featuring the work of three contemporary New York-based designers, Asher Israelow, Egg Collective and Token.

The three unique seating areas will consist of pieces that draw inspiration from NYCB as well as the architecture of the David H. Koch Theater, which was designed in 1964 by Philip Johnson. Their seating areas will be in place on the theater’s Promenade for the duration of NYCB’s 2012-2013 Season.

The creation of new work has always been essential to NYCB’s core mission. Since its inception in 1948, the Company has premiered more than 450 original works and commissioned nearly 50 original scores. In line with this tradition of new work, this design initiative aims to breathe new life into the David H. Koch Theater Promenade space, and support the promotion of young, local design firms while also honoring the modernist design legacy of the iconic New York City venue.

Once again this season the lobbies of the David H. Koch Theater will open one hour prior to curtain time, offering audience members more time before performances to enjoy the theater’s amenities, including the theater’s food and beverage concessions and gift shops, as well as these newly designed seating and lounge options on the Promenade.

EGG COLLECTIVE

 

is comprised of Crystal Ellis, Stephanie Beamer, and Hillary Petrie. They are a Brooklyn-based design company committed to building American-made furniture that merges heirloom-quality craftsmanship with contemporary design. The ladies of Egg Collective do their own woodwork in their shop near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Anything unable to be made in a wood shop is sourced out to small-scale local craftsmen and artisans. Their designs often draw inspiration from architecture, nature, traditional furniture construction, and fashion. Most of their work combines multiple materials and finishes. They were named “Best New Designer” at the 2012 ICFF Editors Awards.

 

ASHER ISRAELOW

 

was born in New York City and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with degrees in fine arts and architecture. Currently, he designs buildings and builds furniture from his studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Drawing on his training as an architect and a love of lore, Israelow creates work for the modern explorer. Each piece narrates the story of its materials. All the wood is ethically and locally sourced, building upon the importance of origins. The studio produces all original and small batch pieces built to last for generations. The work emphasizes a handcrafted and emergent vision of contemporary design.

 

TOKEN

 

is a Brooklyn-based design and manufacturing studio that develops contemporary handcrafted furniture and lighting objects embodying the evolving intentions of American modernism. Observation and a careful consideration of function, structural ingenuity, material dynamics and aesthetic coherence are instilled in each of Token’s signature pieces. The result is a collection aimed at providing elements for purposeful, considered living. The principals of Token are Will Kavesh and Emrys Berkower.

Sir Paul McCartney’s Ocean’s Kingdom to Premiere at NYCB’s Fall Gala on Thursday, September 22

 

Principal Dancer Charles Askegard to Give Farewell Performance on Sunday, October 9

New York City Ballet will open its 2011-2012 season at Lincoln Center on Tuesday, September 13, with four weeks of fall performances through October 9, featuring 16 ballets including works by George Balanchine, Peter Martins, Jerome Robbins and Christopher Wheeldon.

The four-week fall season opens with the return of Peter Martins’ full-length staging of Swan Lake, set to Tschaikovsky’s beloved score, and featuring sets and costumes designed by the acclaimed Danish artist Per Kirkeby. The Company will present six performances of Swan Lake, which was last performed to sold-out houses during NYCB’s 2011 winter season.

The highlight of the fall season will be the September 22 Fall Gala, which will feature the World Premiere of Ocean’s Kingdom, a collaboration between Sir Paul McCartney and NYCB Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins. The production will mark the first time that Sir Paul has written an original orchestral score for dance, and will also feature costumes designed by the acclaimed fashion designer Stella McCartney, who will be designing costumes for the theater for the first time ever. Ocean’s Kingdom will also feature projections designed by S. Katy Tucker, and lighting designed by Mark Stanley.

The September 22 gala performance will also include a special “See the Music…” presentation featuring NYCB Music Director Fayçal Karoui and the New York City Ballet Orchestra, which will open the evening with a unique exploration of the Ocean’s Kingdom score.

Following the World Premiere performance, Ocean’s Kingdom will be performed four additional times during the fall season on September 24, 25, 27, and 29 (as well as five additional performances during the 2012 winter season on January 19, 21, 24, 27, and 29).

The opening week of fall will also feature a special Balanchine Black & White performance on Friday, September 16, featuring Episodes, Apollo, and The Four Temperaments. For this specially priced program all tickets will be $50 and $25.

Other highlights of the fall include a second Balanchine Black & White performance on Tuesday, September 20, as well as five performances of Balanchine’s full-length Jewels on September 28, October 1, 2, 4 and 7.

On Sunday, October 9, the final day of the fall season, NYCB will also present a special farewell performance for Principal Dancer Charles Askegard who will retire after 25 years as a dancer, first at American Ballet Theatre, where he began his career in 1987, and then at NYCB which he joined as a Soloist in 1997, becoming a Principal the following year. The program for Askegard’s farewell performance will consist of Jerome Robbins’ In Memory Of…, and George Balanchine’s Diamonds (pas de deux), Episodes, and Western Symphony.
