Hong Kong – 18 November 2011 – The Hong Kong Ballet is delighted to announce that it has been chosen as a Partner Company by the Artistic Committee of the world-renowned dance competition, the Prix de Lausanne. The 40th edition of the international ballet competition will be held from 29 January – 4 February 2012, and The Hong Kong Ballet is particularly proud to be the first Asian dance company to join the Prix de Lausanne family. In recent years, Asian dancers have increasingly dominated the list of selected candidates, and the choice of The Hong Kong Ballet as a partner company recognises the growing influence of dancers from this region. Other partner companies include the Bavarian State Ballet, Béjart Ballet Lausanne, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Hamburg Ballet – John Neumeier, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, National Ballet of Canada and The Royal Ballet.

The Prix de Lausanne aims to discover, promote and support the world’s finest young talents. At the beginning of each year, the Committee invites a selected group of young dancers between the ages of 15 and 18, who are not yet professional artists, to Switzerland. The competition is one of a kind – instead of being judged for a single performance, competitors participate in a week of classes, workshops and performances, watched and evaluated by a jury of illustrious figures from the dance world. Winners of the competition are awarded either a year of training at one of the Prix’s Partner Schools or an apprenticeship at a Partner Company such as The Hong Kong Ballet. Former Prix de Lausanne winners are among the elite of the ballet world, including Darcey Bussell, Alina Cojocaru, Carlos Acosta, Benjamin Millepied and Christopher Wheeldon.

Artistic Director Madeleine Onne said “It is a real honour to be part of this competition, which is so crucial to the development of young, talented dancers’ careers. At The Hong Kong Ballet we are always looking out for the stars of tomorrow, and joining the Prix de Lausanne family gives us a unique opportunity to welcome rising stars to join our Company in Hong Kong.”
