The Hong Kong Ballet will open its new season with a revival of Swan Lake, one of the world’s best loved classical ballets. Tickets for the 5 performances of this ballet in 2011 sold out so quickly that this time the Company will give 10 performances, giving everyone a chance to watch this bewitching ballet. Swan Lake will be staged at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre’s Grand Theatre from 23rd August to 1st September 2013. The first week’s performances will feature live accompaniment by Hong Kong Sinfonietta under the baton of Benjamin Pope.

Guest star Kim Kimin from the world-famous Mariinsky Ballet in Russia will dance the role of the dashing Prince Siegfried on 30th August and 1st September at the 7:30pm performance, and the hugely demanding roles of the Black Swan and White Swan will be performed by the beautiful dancers of The Hong Kong Ballet. One of the secrets of Swan Lake’s enduring popularity is its difficulty. In particular the bravura dancing, as evidenced by the 32 fouettés, makes the ballet enchanting to watch, and each ballerina must draw on immense confidence and maturity in order to cope with the emotional and physical pressure of performing the most famous roles in classical ballet.

The Hong Kong Ballet is presenting a suite of extra activities around the ballet, all designed to enhance audience members’ enjoyment of Swan Lake. Events scheduled include a Pre-Performance Talk (23rd August – 6:50pm), a Preview (13th August – 7:30pm to 8:45pm) performed by The Hong Kong Ballet’s dancers and a Pre-Performance workshop (25th August – 12:00pm to 1:00pm).

Tickets are available NOW at all URBTIX outlets and via the URBTIX website. $1500 (VIP) ticketholders will be entitled to attend a special meet and greet session with The Hong Kong Ballet’s dancers on stage after the performance, plus a complimentary drink. Simple present the ticket stub at The Hong Kong Ballet’s reception counter on 2/F, Grand Theatre Foyer on the performance date to redeem the complimentary drink coupon. Each ticket stub is valid for one free drink only. For details, please visit Hong Kong Ballet’s website or email

About Swan Lake

The story focuses on the beautiful Odette, who has been cursed by the evil Von Rothbart and can only take on human form at night; the curse can only be broken by a vow of true love. The handsome young Prince is enthralled by Odette and they fall in love. At the Ball, Von Rothbart arrives with Odile, who he has enchanted to look exactly like Odette. This tricks the Prince into believing that Odile is Odette, and he unintentionally vows to marry Odile the Black Swan. Broken-hearted, the White Swan Queen Odette is reunited with the Prince by the lake for one last dance, sealing their eternal love and breaking Von Rothbart’s spell.
