The National Ballet of Canada’s 60th Anniversary Winter Season Opens with La Fille mal gardée

Principal Casting Announced

Seven Debuts

ballet company logoFebruary 13, 2012… Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced the principal casting for Sir Frederick Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée which opens the Winter Season on February 29, 2012 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

The opening performance will feature Guest Artist Matjash Mrozewski as Widow Simone, Principal Dancers Sonia Rodriguez and Piotr Stanczyk as Lise and Colas and First Soloist Robert Stephen in his debut as Alain.

Also making their debuts this season are Principal Character Artist Kevin D. Bowles as Widow Simone, Principal Dancer Jillian Vanstone and First Soloist Tina Pereira as Lise, Second Soloist Naoya Ebe as Colas and Corps de Ballet members Skylar Campbell and Christopher Stalzer as Alain.

Sir Frederick Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée is one of the oldest and most beloved of all narrative ballets. It was brought into the National Ballet’s repertoire in 1976 by then Artistic Director Alexander Grant and was the first of 47 ballets generously gifted to the National Ballet by The Volunteer Committee.

La Fille mal gardée is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Grant who died in London, England on September 30, 2011 at the age of 86.

The Winter Season continues with Rudolf Nureyev‘s beloved classic The Sleeping Beauty March 10 – 18, 2012, followed by John Neumeier’s moving contemporary adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s great play The Seagull March 22 – 25, 2012.
