The Nutcracker 15 Glorious Years!
Principal Casting Announced

ballet, ballet, news, canada, December 1, 2010… The National Ballet of Canada’s The Nutcracker celebrates its 15th anniversary as Toronto’s favourite holiday tradition. Created by James Kudelka in 1995, The Nutcracker is set in 19th-century Russia and takes audiences on a magical journey through the glittering world of the Snow Queen to the opulent splendour of the Sugar Plum Fairy’s palace.

The opening performance on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 2:00 pm will feature First Soloist Jillian Vanstone in the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy and First Soloist Etienne Lavigne as Peter/The Nutcracker.

The evening performance on December 11 will feature Principal Dancers Bridgett Zehr and Zdenek Konvalina in the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Peter/The Nutcracker.

Principal Dancer Jiří Jelinek makes his debut as Uncle Nikolai on December 16 at 7:00 pm. Mr. Jelinek joined the company in 2010 as a Principal Dancer.

The Nutcracker choreography and libretto are by James Kudelka, music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, set and costume design by Santo Loquasto and lighting design by Jennifer Tipton.

Nutcracker Story Time will continue this year, beginning 45 minutes prior to every performance. This engaging, interactive telling of The Nutcracker will take place in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

The Nutcracker is onstage at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts from December 11, 2010 to January 2, 2011. Click here for more information.

Presumably because those roles – Marie, Nikolai, etc are quite important…………but I’ve never heard of Baba, Mischa’s nurse and Nikolai! Sounds like we need a DVD to be made!
