Following on from last night’s news about the new Royal Ballet season, I can now expand on the casting for the beginning of the season. Great to see Akane Takada tackling Aurora with Steven McRae in October – that’s one to book ! The Rojo/Acosta partnership is completely absent from Manon casting. Melissa Hamilton gets a debut as the Sugar Plum Fairy with Sergei Polunin as her Prince in The Nutcracker.
Still, precious little for Carlos Acosta who won’t be reprising a role in Jewels (Rubies) or Manon, and in fact is scheduled to dance just 3 times (in Requeim) between September and February 2012.
Nehemiah Kish has plenty of work, with debuts in Jewels, Requiem, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker.
If you’ve been worried about how The Royal Ballet will fare in the face of the Arts Council cuts to funding, part of the answer is to be found in the ticket prices for the new season. A top priced seat for The Sleeping Beauty will set you back £117 (£94 for the matinee) & The Nutcracker £104 (matinee £83). Amphitheatre top priced seats are £64 for both productions and £55 for Jewels, £51 for The Sleeping Beauty & The Nutcracker matinees.

Interesting casting combinations for the classics – am sure I’m not the only one questioning the absence of Carlos Acosta, of Tamara Rojo from Manon and The Nutcracker, and Johan Kobborg from most things except The Nutcracker……are they leaving and becoming just occasional guests?
