The Royal Ballet School announces details of its Summer Season 2012 at the Linbury Studio Theatre and on the main stage of the Royal Opera House from Wednesday 4 – 7 and 15 July.
The Royal Ballet School Summer Season 2012 features choreography by former students of The Royal Ballet School including world premieres of works by Matthew Hart and Alastair Marriott, together with the School’s first-ever performances of a work by the celebrated Czech choreographer Jiri Kylian.
The climax of the Summer Season is the end-of-year performance on the main stage of the Royal Opera House on Sunday 15 July at 12 noon, culminating in the spectacular Grand Défilé featuring more than 200 students in an exuberant finale.
The Royal Ballet School’s annual Summer Season opens with five performances at the Linbury Studio Theatre from Wednesday 4 July – Saturday 7 July and culminates with the end-of-year performance on the main stage of the Royal Opera House on Sunday 15 July.
The 2012 programme showcases the choreography of former students of The Royal Ballet School, including world premieres of Simple Symphony by Alastair Marriott and Games for Gods, a work specially commissioned from Matthew Hart to commemorate the London Olympic Games. Also included is Jiri Kylian’s Un Ballo, celebrating the first-ever performance by The Royal Ballet School of a work by the influential Czech choreographer and former student. Together with celebrated choreographer John Neumeier’s Yondering, the presentation of works by former students celebrates the School’s historic commitment to choreographic training.
The programme also includes the upbeat, contemporary Uneven Ground choreographed by Paul Boyd.
Excerpts from some of the great heritage ballets will also be performed including Paquita and Raymonda.
Director of The Royal Ballet School, Gailene Stock AM comments: ‘I am thrilled to be able to present such a wide range of choreographic styles by former and current students for our end-of-year performances 2012. This reflects the School’s commitment to developing choreographic talent and continuing to contribute to world choreography – the life-blood of our art form. We are particularly excited to be celebrating in public the work of the great Jiri Kylian with these performances of Un Ballo and to present world premieres from the new generation of choreographers Alastair Marriott and Matthew Hart. We are deeply grateful to Summer Season sponsor Imagination for its continued support of our work and to the generosity of the sponsors of the individual ballets.’
To complete the programme, works choreographed by The Royal Ballet School’s artistic staff and students will be performed together with a range of national and character dances.
The Summer Season is brought to a spectacular climax on 15 July with the breathtaking display of more than 200 students filling the stage of the Royal Opera House in the exuberant and fast-moving Grand Défilé.
