The Royal Ballet School presents landmark series of masterclasses

The Royal Ballet School is pleased to present a landmark series of lectures and masterclasses exploring the European and Russian ballet schools, their influence on Ninette de Valois and the development of an ‘English’ style.

In 1926 Ninette de Valois set out to establish a national ballet school and affiliated company in a country where there was no such institution. She hoped that a uniquely ‘English style’ could be forged, a fusion of the best of the old European and Russian Schools, with qualities and training special to the English temperament and physique.

This series of Exploration Days will look at the traditions of the major Schools that influenced De Valois by investigating their pedagogy, training programmes and training influences. Each day comprises the examination of the historicalcontext of each School, their stylistic qualities and includes a ballet masterclass exhibiting their unique characteristics.
