The Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker in rehearsal

Fumi Kaneko

Fumi Kaneko & Nehemiah Kish

Every now and then The Royal Ballet offers Insight Evenings, where Friends of Covent Garden and sometimes members of the public can watch the company rehearing the rep, or listen to dancers talk about their careers or historians, or experts in hair and make-up talk about their particular involvement with ballet. Sometimes, as with this Insight, you’ll get the chance to see relatively unknown Corps de ballet dancers rehearsing for Principal roles. Some of the Insights are filmed, and some are available as podcasts on iTunes U.

Here you can join répétiteurs Jonathan Cope and Lesley Collier for half an hour as they coach Royal Ballet dancers Fumi Kaneko and Nehemiah Kish in the Sugar Plum Fairy pas de deux from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. The painist is Philip Cornfield.

People are often surprised to see how quickly the dancers pick up the corrections : this is the result of 8 years of training!
