THE WASHINGTON BALLET’S ANNUAL GALA: ROCK & ROLL BALL

TWB’s premier social and philanthropic event to be held at the Embassy of the Russian Federation on May 12

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Ballet (TWB) celebrates the company’s popular Rock & Roll program with the Rock & Roll Ball on May 12.  TWB’s annual social and philanthropic event will be hosted for the first time by the Embassy of the Russian Federation under the patronage of Ambassador and Mrs. Kislyak. The Rock & Roll Ball will be co-chaired by international journalists and documentary producers Leslie and Andrew Cockburn.

“It’s a thrill to chair the gala for The Washington Ballet, a company of such radiant talent,” said Ms. Cockburn. “We are so lucky to have TWB Artistic Director Septime Webre in Washington. He is a world-class artist and I hope to throw a party as memorable as this season’s productions.”

“The Cockburns bring an international flair to this year’s gala,” said TWB Board Chair Sylvia de Leon. “Their social and cultural prominence on both sides of the ocean will attract an exciting array of personalities. Leslie and Andrew are devoted to the ballet and Leslie is a committed member of the Board of Directors. We are thrilled by their desire to make a difference to the organization in such a meaningful way.”

The evening begins with a seated dinner for 500 guests catered by Susan Gage. As guests enter the Embassy, ballerinas dressed in black tutus and holding guitars will line the grand staircase. During the cocktail hour, guests will enjoy a vodka tasting and signature cocktails sponsored by Bacardi while being entertained by the four piece band JP McDermott & Western Bop.

Syzygy Event Productions and Digital Lighting will create rock and roll decor in each of the Embassy rooms, including the Golden Hall. The themes will be based on the personalities of famous rock stars: The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry and Elvis.

Guests will be treated to performances by dancers of The Washington Ballet and students from TWB@THEARC, including excerpts from Rock & Roll. The evening continues into the wee hours with dancing to The Dexter Lake Band.

Proceeds from the Rock & Roll Ball fund TWB’s Community Engagement programs, including DanceDC, an educational initiative that reaches 800 D.C. public school children annually.

Monies raised from the Rock & Roll Ball will also fund the Excel! program that provides full scholarships for talented DanceDC students to continue their dance training at The Washington School of Ballet.

Reservation Information: Sponsorship tickets for Rock & Roll Ball start at $1,000 and Table Sponsorships start at $10,000. Individual Tickets, starting at $600 will be available after April 30, based on availability. ABOUT THE WASHINGTON BALLET

Originally founded as The Washington School of Ballet in 1944 by legendary ballet pioneer Mary Day and incorporated as a professional company in 1976, The Washington Ballet (TWB) is one of the pre-eminent ballet organizations in the United States.  TWB built an international reputation presenting bold works by choreographers from around the world, including Choo-San Goh, Christopher Wheeldon, Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp and Nacho Duato, as well as Neoclassical masterworks and fresh stagings of 19th century classics. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Septime Webre and Executive Director Russell P. Allen, TWB has embraced a three-part mission: ensuring excellence in its professional performance company; growing the next generation of dancers through its Washington School of Ballet; and serving the community in which it resides through robust community engagement programs.  For more information, visit the Washington Ballet website.
