THE WASHINGTON BALLET STUDIO COMPANY PRESENTS SLEEPING BEAUTY (SUITE)
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Ballet Studio Company presents Sleeping Beauty (Suite), April 16 and 17, 2011. A flagship work, The Sleeping Beauty is recognized as one of the supreme achievements of classical ballet. This abbreviated and elegant rendition is the perfect showpiece for The Washington Ballet’s Studio Company, especially in the intimate theater at THEARC.
“Our Studio Company is a promising group of talented, young dancers who are developing the techniques and artistry necessary for professional careers in dance,” says Artistic Director Septime Webre. “This rendition of Sleeping Beauty showcases the artistic and technical range of our younger dancers, while entertaining the audience.”
Based on the French fairytale by Charles Perrault, The Sleeping Beauty is the tale of a beautiful princess cursed by an evil fairy to sleep for 100 years. She can only be awakened by the kiss of a handsome prince. Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty was first performed in 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, and is set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s stunning score. One of the classical repertoire’s most famous ballets, TWB’s Studio Company presents an abbreviated version of this full-length masterpiece suited for all ages, featuring Judanna Lynn’s dazzling costumes and additional choreography by TWB’s Trainee Program Ballet Master Carlos Valcárcel.
The Washington Ballet Studio Company will give three performances of Sleeping Beauty (Suite) at THEARC Theater, located at 1901 Mississippi Ave., SE. Tickets, priced at $50 (general admission), may be purchased by calling 202.362.3606 x605 or by visiting the Washington Ballet website.
