SHORT BYTE

Ballet San Jose presents a World Premiere production of The Nutcracker, December 8 through 23, 2012, featuring all-new choreography by Karen Gabay with sets by Paul Kelly and costumes by the legendary Theoni Aldredge. Symphony Silicon Valley will perform the immortal score by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky under the baton of BSJ Music Director and Conductor George Daugherty. This will be the first new production of The Nutcracker that Ballet San Jose has produced in over 30 years.

Karen Gabay is a principal dancer with Ballet San Jose.  As a choreographer, she has created a number of works for her own company, Pointe of Departure, and several works for Ballet San Jose including 2-2-Tango which made its world premiere in San Jose in 2009. She was the 2011 Arts Council Silicon Valley recipient of the Artist Fellowship Award for Choreography. “It is an exciting opportunity for me to choreograph a new Nutcracker, and I am looking forward to working with such a wonderful group of dancers,” said Gabay. “I have great respect for these artists and want to bring out their unique and special talents through my choreography.”

In keeping with Ballet San Jose tradition, the entire theater will become a wonderland of surprises with choirs singing in the lobby, a Boutique of ballet and holiday treasures, and dancers in costume posing for photos with families prior to the curtain. Just a short walk from the theater is downtown San Jose’s “Christmas in the Park” display, amusement rides for the children, and the Downtown Ice Rink Under the Palms.

ABOUT BALLET SAN JOSE

Ballet San Jose was founded in 1983 as the City Center Ballet of San Jose, and in 1985 began a co-venture relationship with Cleveland Ballet that spanned the two cities for nearly 15 years before its re-establishment in 2000 as an independent resident company in San Jose.  Currently, with a professional company of more than 40 dancers under the leadership of Principal Ballet Master Raymond Rodriguez and Artistic Advisor Wes Chapman, Ballet San Jose presents nearly 30 performances annually at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts.  In 2011, Ballet San Jose formed a unique relationship with American Ballet Theatre (ABT) to catalyze new and rapid artistic growth and innovation, highlighted by strategic access to ABT’s vast repertory, experience base, and network of internationally renowned artists.  Ballet San Jose School is the official school of Ballet San Jose, training more than 400 students annually, and in 2012 became the first institution on the west coast certified to offer the complete ABT National Training Curriculum.
